Sometimes a retracted chin may create the illusion of an excessively projected nose. In this case, a mentoplasty can be a solution to harmonize the chin-nose ratio by increasing the chin.

Mentoplasty can be performed by increasing the volume with hyaluronic acid or by placement of a chin implant/prosthesis (usually made out of silicone).

Regarding the placement of a chin implant, the prosthesis is normally inserted through an intraoral incision avoiding visible skin scars. In cases of prominent receding chin, there may be indication for orthognathic surgery, which is performed by the maxillofacial surgeon.
